In the early 1950's Oldsmobiles like this one dominated a newly formed circuit for stock car racing called NASCAR. In those days, Rocket 88's, and the "Fabulous Hudson Hornets" with twin-H power, were the winners of most events. Most of the tracks then were half mile dirt tracks, and Daytona used the beach and Highway A-1-A. The combination of a big horsepower V-8 in the smaller-lighter 88 body made Olds Rockets the Muscle Cars of their day. Main competition came from a heavier Hudson that did quite well on dirt with its low center of gravity, better handling, and big six with twin carbuerators.
Thanks for the great pictures of this car. It is a fine example. I love the typical fifties green color, the chrome '88' blades atop the rear fenders, and of course, the rocket on the trunk lid, and the globe above the grille. It's still hard for me to believe GM did away with the Oldsmobile marque. They made some great cars over the years.
