Welcoming Committee, Antarctica, 2004

This image is linked to the previous image by the blue ice – but here I reveal more of it. The tiny upright figures of eight Gentoo penguins form what seems to be a welcoming committee. Actually, penguins gather in groups at water’s edge because it is too dangerous for them to swim out for food individually. For these penguins, there is safety in numbers; one will warn the others if a foraging seal interrupts their hunt. Antarctica is all about survival, for animals and man alike. This photograph offers us insights into one mechanism of survival.

Thanks, Denise. I like the scale icongruity of this too -- sometimes you don't have to see the subject (in this case the penguins) in detail in order to learn something about them.

that's wonderful. i like it because when you see penguin photos, it's usually with lots of penguins together. i like how the ice, which looks almost like cake icing, dwarfs the penguins. thanks, denise

Once again, you have gone to the core of an image, Lisa. They look so at home because this is their home. This picture is about ice first, penguins second. Once again, I am playing with scale incongruity to express an idea.

Penguins yeah! I envy you, that must have been such a blast. They look so at home!

You are right about the blue here -- it adds a vitality to the iceberg that would otherwise not be there. And that vitality echoes the curiosity of the penguins on the edge of the water.

The blue also provides such wonderful texture. It seems to make the frozen come alive...
