Blue Ice, Antarctica, 2004

Blue icebergs are often seen floating in the channels that line the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Once again, I change pace by moving near and showing only a small, shimmering blue underwater edge of this huge iceberg. To me, the blue ice symbolizes a cold colder than cold – a valid symbol when it comes to a place were temperatures plunge and ice is forever.

Thanks for the question. I am not scientist so I can't give you a definitive answer. But I think it has something to do with the climate itself and oxygenation.

Phil, the blue color is just amazing!!! almost unreal, but this is what caught my eye! it's amazing what a nature can produce and a photographer can capture! hehe

Yes, I did. That's what I was thinking as i made this photograph. I don't think I've ever made a colder shot than this!

You are right, Anna -- the Antarctic ice thaws in the summer and freezes over again in the winter. But it never quite goes away, and to me, it still looks colder than cold.

An interesting point, Tim -- the sky is indeed present in the sea, and it in this case, it was leaden gray. That's why the water itself is gray. But you are right -- the blue ice recalls the blue of sky, and brings that color into the sea with it as well.

Yet, blue also evokes for me, having not been there, the warmth of the sky. In this case, a frozen sky.
