Carnegie Museum of Natural History

This is a juvenile Red-tailed hawk, Buteo jamaicensis.

Today, a Saturday, I had to work. I was a bit disappointed as I’ve been there a lot these past few weeks and while the place does give me plenty of photo-ops, I really wanted to do more “nature photos.” When lunch time came I stepped outside to check the weather, it was very cold and very gray. As I stood there thinking where in the building I would go I suddenly noticed this hawk sitting in a tree not 20 feet (6 meters) from me!! Thinking, “Oh damn, the one day I didn’t have my camera actually in hand…,” I quickly went back in and grabbed it. I was lucky in that this bird was really hungry and waited in the tree for me. It had found a good place to sit and watch for the little creatures that populate the slopes that lead down to the garage. Of course, in my haste I forgot my coat and gloves so for the next 20 minutes I stood there pointing my camera at it, freezing to death. I shot about 130 shots, many of them boring, of it just sitting there in the tree. It was so tame I was even able to climb up on the wall overlooking the slopes to get some other angles, an action that got me yelled at by security…LOL Eventually it went after some birds but missed then returned to its roost. Another 20 minutes went by when it suddenly dove down slope and nailed a big juicy rat. I got shots of that but they were not as good as this one. Eventually, I’ll add those to my Carnegie gallery…I’m so glad I had to go to work today….

Unstinkin' believable, Ron!!!! What a terrific shot - and a great reminder that the best nature shots are born of patience and LOTS of outtakes. Yours certainly paid off BIG with this one! Tremendous image.

That's just about perfect! When I saw the thumb, I thought it would be some exhibit at your museum. It's exciting that you caught this beautiful buteo in flight.

Wow! Darling this hawk is so beautiful it is surreal. The cool white winter sky gives it a textbook definition that really highlights her natural beauty in flight. No wonder you wanted me to ckeck out todays photo!

I only had to crop it a hair. I was standing on a stairwell very near it's flight path. It flew right past my head!
David Mingay18-Jan-2004 21:14
Fantastic (did Linda just say the same?) and with such a relatively short lens. Is this the full frame, or did you crop?
Linda Alstead18-Jan-2004 17:06
A really fantastic photo - it sounds like you really suffered for your art but how well worth it? Congratulations on a really fine shot.

Great capture. I'll bet you needed every bit of that 1/1500s to catch that.
Well done.

Ron this is breathtaking! Your frozen fingers were certainly able to handle that Canon. I love hawks and birds of prey, and have missed so many pics of them. This is the dream shot!

Absolutely amazing capture Ron. With my luck I wouldn't have my camera with me. Well done.

Yes, an EXCELLENT catch. Thank you for getting so cold for this picture and for the others. We don't get these in our towns...:-(
