I should add a bit of history to this picture. My family was to have a mini reunion at my Uncle's farm. Within an hour or two of our arrival, my cousins (ages similar to my children) arrived. They began to explore the farm and play in the barn. The barn was filled with hay. One room in the barn was empty and had a rope swing hanging from the ceiling. There was only one way into this room -- climbing over the bales of hay.
When the fire first started, I knew the kids (particularly one of my daughters) were playing in the rope swing room. I was afraid they'd be trapped in the fire. Before I panicked, and as I was strangely watching myself to see what I'd do, I simultaneously thought about a game plan and actively sought out kids. Fortunately, all the kids were accounted for, and I didn't have to test myself. I had no doubt I would have gone into the fire after whatever child was trapped. I just didn't know how I was going to do what.
The fire started when the boy pictured in silhouette turned on a halogen light that was too close to the straw.
