Anna, right from the beginning it is difficult not to notice the iced up face, and this is where my journey through your image starts, I love the details on the head produced by the combination of ice and light, the ice on the face just can't go unnoticed, I personally would prefer the face to be covered with less ice (just to show the contours of the face and the beauty of this woman instead of this hanging ice that for me symbolizes sickness or sorrow), although I understand that the incongruity of this is so strong that it perhaps makes the image stand out above the rest. From her face my eyes are led by the lines in the background to the fountain on the right. Thanks to the light and slow shutter speed the falling water doesn't contain much detail, yet because of the fantastic light it's milky shape simply supports the figure in the middle. Next I move to the left where my eyes shortly rest on the rusty background, thanks to the shallow debth of field even though the left side has fairly strong colour, it doesn't compete with the statue, my journey continues up, where again the lines in the background take me to where my journey has started.

Although the image doesn't have much of a foreground, the depth of it is very good, think we have here various sources of light coming from different directions, but it falls on the figure in such a way that simply shows debth, textures, abstracts certain parts, and the ice crystals simply add more debth. I noticed you weren't overly happy with the background, but I personally don't find it distracting, the shallow dof helps, and I personally find that the lines help organize the image for me.

Feel that the composition is very well balanced, not much negative space, like the fact that she is looking into the picture, square format is quite appropriate here.

The colours are interesting but personally I find a little conflict here, because the image for me seems very cold, as ice always is, yet the colours are warm and cozy, I am trying to decide if I like this conflict or not.
I think the image conveys timeless feeling, perhaps the crystals of ice work for me like spider's web. One more thing I realized through this image is that art can be photogrphed succesfully.... just not by me, tried number of times, I am just never happy with the outcome, I quite like the result here (even though I am not too crazy about the ice on her face).

Anna, this is very beautiful. The play of light and shadows in the water is excellent.

Wow. When I saw this gasped. And then I remembered seeing it before, and checking the comments find that I did, way back in Feb.

One of my favorite photos anywhere...:-)

This is a great pic. The subject and the background is similar in colour but lighting still make the statue stands out. The water adds a touch of drama to it. Wonderful :)

Hi Carol and Phil, many thx for comments. Actually it was Mark Elert who saw my first version of this statue and told me to decrease the focus in the background. It was by a busy bus stop and I didn't think about the background in the first shot. Using f1.4 helped a lot, even though I couldn't find an angle without any distracting background. A belated thanks to Mark too for the tip.

What Carol saw as ice crystals forming, I see as an eruption of water frozen by time around the face of the statue. It is just as fascinating -- no matter which interpretation is true. The photo works because of a subject made incongruous by the camera's ability to stop time in its tracks, and by your use of backlighting to highlight the water and abstract the subject.

This shot is one of my favorites in your Stockholm gallery! I just love the spray lines bouncing off the sculpture and the beginnings of ice crystals forming.
