Nokia wired remote for EOS (Mobilephone Handsfree-set)

"Nokia" wired remote for EOS (Mobilephone Handsfree-set)

Do-It-Yourself wired-remote for EOS-cameras
MOD: Mobilephone Handsfree-set
Costs: ~ 1 euro
Time: ~ 5 minutes
Tools: Soldering-iron, multimeter

I needed the wired remote for my 300D to minimize shutter-release shake for macro or
longzoom shots. The wireless remote is not suitable for my purpose since it's not possible
to use from behind of the camera. I went looking for wired Canon remote from local camerashops
without luck. So I decided to build it by myself.

I tried to get the required parts from local electronicshop but the quality of triggers
and connectors were bad - not to mention that the triggers were HUGE and
not very usable for this purpose. Also I coulnd't find any stylish small box where to fit them.

While talking to mobilephone in the car with handsfree set I realized that it is
allmost perfect solution. The cost here in Finland is typically only 1-5 euros,
It has good solid 2.5mm plug, it includes the wire and the trigger and most of all;
it is very stylish and elegant - fits nicely to my 300D :)
Only negative thing is that it doesn't have separate button for prefocus.
But hey - it's only 1€ :)

In the real wired-remote for EOS you can prefocus with different button.
Since HF-set only has single button I just connected focus and shutter together.
The trigger works bu connecting focus(tip) and shutter(second ring) to the ground(sleeve).
Real model also has standard 2.5 mm stereo-plug. HF-set has 4 wires - microphone as extra.
I just connected the stereo-ground (sleeve) to the first-ring to make it like
standard stereoplug. So if you like to add extra button for autofocus put it between
second ring and sleeve (and separate second ring from tip).

The modification takes only 5 minutes. Just open the plastic cover and
disconnect all wires. Remove the speaker - you don't need it.
Use multimeter to check what wire matches correct point in the 2.5mm plug.
You need tie together the first two (sleeve and first ring) and
the last two wires (tip & second ring) See the picture upperleft.
The trigger goes between these two sets of two wires. Very simple.

There are many HF-models which all looks different inside.
You need to measure the correct soldering points for trigger from
the model you got. I don't include the pictures here because propably
you got different anyway.
I believe you can't break anything if the wires are connected wrongly -
(I didn't :) it just won't work as supposed.
Just remember to turn off camera before plugging.

Onko valotus päällä vain napin painalluksen ajan, vai alkaako ekasta painalluksesta ja loppuu toiseen?
