Simulation of observed lunar transit.jpg

This is an approximate simulation of what by a pure stroke of luck I saw pass over the moon at 15 Oct 23:35 PDT. It took 15-20 seconds to cross and I saw an amazing amount of detail! The object is intentionally not antialiased in this picture, because there was a clear delineation between top and bottom halves.

(The photo of the moon used is a throwaway handheld shot taken the same night, through the same eyepiece and telescope I observed the transit through. I'll bet I can get a better shot if I spend some time setting up.)

I found your page on the internet, because I was trying to figure out how common these transits were. I had a similar experience of serendipity. The satellite we saw was much bigger, and probably much closer since it passed the full moon in less than 10 seconds.

How do we find more of these.. I want that magical feeling again!
