Colors, Waterlooplein Market, Amsterdam, Holland, 2003

Fabrics of the Far East fill a stall at Waterlooplein Market with contrasting colors and textures. Such contrasts are the very point of this picture. I organize my image around as much contrast in color and texture as possible. I also contrast the size, shape and textures of the pillows on the left to the tablecloths on the right. Color itself can make a strong subject for a picture. But you usually must evoke mood and meaning through strong contrasts to make it work.

This is a very sensual picture, Maureen. It invites you to reach out and touch and see, and the contrasting primary colors that dominate the scene --the reds and yellows -- evoke that sense of celebration you feel. There was so much contrasting color in this stall that I had to isolate a single piece of fabric -- that big red drape on the right -- to use as my focal point.

The colors are wild here - they demand your attention at once, yet it's the texture that is so inviting. I just want to walk into the photograph and start touching the fabric to see what they're made of and fully appreciate how intricate the detailed work is. This is really wonderful - a celebration of life.

Henk, I made this in Amsterdam, but those fabrics could well be from India -- they are that colorful!

If you had said "This photo was taken in India", I would have believe it, so much color that I recognize from there.

Love this, i feel the textures, and i feel lost in the photo. Unlike some photos on pbase, that are full of color, but have no feeling and leave me cold. this sucks me right in. thanks, denise
