Gilded domes, Kostroma, Russia, 2003

I wanted more than just another picture of gilded church domes. I wanted a photograph rich in energy, particularly tension. I chose a camera position allowing me to shoot one dome emerging from another. I noticed a thin span of blue sky running between the big dome at center and the smaller steeple on the left. That small area creates tension, and I increased it by zooming in to apply pressure on all four sides of the picture at once. The gilded tiles glitter in the morning sun. The decorative sunburst coming out of the steeple is an appropriate touch for this sunsplashed picture. But the key element is the pressure I applied to those structures from the edges -- it makes the entire image crackle with energy and tension.

Glad you feel it, Sofia, and I hope you can use this idea to strengthen tension in your own images such as the one I commented on today athttp://www.pbase.com/image/91947996

Thanks, Clara, for pointing out the incongruence here -- i think you must be referring to that silhouetted sunburst that contrasts so strongly in scale to the golden domes. Thanks for seeing aspiration and ambition in it as well. All of this is intensified with the framing, however which is why I post this image in this gallery. It is the edge pressure that pushes the eye into the image, and the sliver of blue negative space between steeple and dome that calls for its attention.

The dark sun in contrast with the golden domes is the main incongruence that I see. A beautiful image that talks of human aspiration for the spiritual and also about ambition.

So that’s what "tension" in a picutre can do to viewers…Now I start getting it…Thanks Phil.

What you are sensing here, Dandan, is the energy created by my tight framing and the careful positioning of "negative space" which is that sliver of sky between the gold dome and its black neighbor. I loved your fantasy here, which turns what is probably a weather vane into a radio antenna sending out mysterious messages.

Wow! I can see the energy is pulling out from this! The gilded domes are like giant energy sources and they are using the shadowed building as a transmitting device. The structure on top of the shadowed building is the antenna propagating a mysteries power…visually and spiritually….
I am speechless!

"Professor Phil" likes your interpretation here, Larry. Light does add dimension to this scene. There is also abstraction in the steeple at left. However, is the tension created by my framing and vantage point that brings this picture to life.

The lighting made this picture work for me...the sharp shadows accent the textures of the domes and the silhouetted star and tower provide an anchor for the composition. I'm going to be looking for situations where I can use a similar technique. Thank you again, Professor Phil!
