OKT Switch Job

Six miles (9.6 km) north of Enid, Oklahoma

The OKT switch job returning to North Enid Yard from the Great Lakes Carbon coke plant with 35 cars pullled by MKT GP7's #106 and #101. Although #106 was in the lead, the engineer and crew were in #101. The train was moving so slow I was able to drive to each section line crossing (one mile or 1.6 km distance) with plenty of time to prepare my next exposure.

At the time engine #106 was the only MKT locomotive remaining in the former red livery. It would eventually return to the Parson Shop to be repainted green and yellow as well as have its short hood lowered. In 1989, after the MKT merger into the Union Pacific Railroad, #106 was retired and sold. Today the locomotive, built in 1951, is operated by the South East Kansas Railroad.

Richard, great photo's and thanks for sharing them, just an FYI the #106 was the last ROAD locomotive in red at that time, switch engine #8 an NW2 stayed red all the way up to the UP takeover.
