1971 AMC Hornet SC/360

Hickory Corners, Michigan

A notable addition to the muscle car culture in 1971 was the SC/360 Hornet,
a compact 2-door muscle car that was intended as a follow-up to the 1969 SC
Rambler. Powered by AMC's 360 cu in V8, the SC was distinguished by styled
wheels, hood scoop, body striping and other performance and appearance upgrades.
And with the addition of the "Go" package's four-barrel carburetor and ram-air
induction, the SC's horsepower changed to 285 hp. This option was only available
on 392 of the Hornets, including this example.

Although the SC/360 could not compete with a lot of other brands of muscle cars,
they had respectable quickness (0 to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds and 1/4 mile times of
14.9 at 95 mph) and tight suspension, big tires, and modest size. American Motors
originally planned to build as many as 10,000 of the cars, but high insurance
premiums killed the SC/360 after a single year's production of just 784 examples.
