Endeavour River estuary

best viewed at original size

To conclude the Cooktown gallery, another view of the estuary in which the saiing ship Endeavour was refuged for repairs after holing out on a coral reef in 1770.
As commentator Stan Grant has recently pointed out*, chance events here turned history. If Captain Cook and his crew perished after hitting the reef - as they very nearly did - Australia might not have become a British colony (and I might not be here telling you this story - though that's no justification for the events that followed).
