I decided to post an old picture of the cherry blossoms on the Tidal Basin, with the Jefferson Memorial in view. It’s a scene that I don’t think can ever be replicated – this year because half the blossoms were destroyed by inclement weather – and in general because the beautiful dome of the Jefferson Memorial is turning black due to a “biofilm” that is growing and can’t be killed, detailed in a Washington Post report https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/the-grimy-black-biofilm-thats-creeping-over-the-jefferson-memorial/2016/08/09/33be9040-5d70-11e6-9d2f-b1a3564181a1_story.html?utm_term=.364ec64ed1d7. I would recommend looking at this article to see what it looks like now.
This is the first year I can remember when we have been living in Washington that we didn’t go see the cherry blossoms. Maybe I’ll change my mind next weekend, but I sort of doubt it. It would just be too distressing, although I am desperate for new pictures ;-)
Finally, a real spring on Capitol Hill, posted earlier:
