Architektur Osmanischer Karawanseraien. Stationen des Fernverkehrs im Osmanischen Reich. Teil 2. Robin Wimmel, Architecture thesis at Technische Universität Berlin.
Caravanserais, buildings for lodging on the long-distance routes, constituted one of the most important building genres in the Orient. The main groups are usually distinguished by Islamic dynasties today. In particular on caravanserais of the Ayyubids and Mamluks in Greater Syria, the Anatolian Seljuks, and the Safavids in the territory of Iran studies aiming to capture the whole groups are available. Concerning caravanserais constructed in an Ottoman context a gap did exist so far. This work attempts to incorporate to the greatest possible extent the entirely or partly preserved structures. By this means, also the base for further research beyond the here made investigations should be improved. The work, structured in an analytical and a catalogue part, comprises 73 caravanserais dispersed to nine nations today. Surveys in 2008 and 2010 allowed to investigate 43 structures on the spot including some unpublished ones.
