Black Rail

Texas

Laterallus jamaicensis

While trying to photograph a Common Yellowthroat today near Rogers Pond at Brazoria NWR something dark in my peripheral vision caught my attention. At first I tried to ignore it thinking it was a Red-winged Blackbird that had been hanging around earlier. When I finally looked at it I was shocked to see that it was actually a Black Rail. Of course as soon as I was aware of what it was it disappeared into the vegetation. Thankfully I was able to rattle off a couple of photos before it was gone. Talk about luck!

Wonderful capture of the Black Rail. They usually hang tight deep in the grass.
