Nobody's Pigeon

I found background information on the Feral Pigeon (from the wild Rock Dove) to be quite interesting. It seems that is what we have most of in Oregon. Here is what Wikipedia says about them:

"Feral pigeons (Columba livia domestica), also called city doves, city pigeons, or street pigeons, are derived from domestic pigeons that have returned to the wild.[2] The domestic pigeon was originally bred from the wild rock dove, which naturally inhabits sea-cliffs and mountains.[3] Rock (i.e., 'wild'), domestic, and feral pigeons are all the same species and will readily interbreed. Feral pigeons find the ledges of buildings to be a substitute for sea cliffs, have become adapted to urban life, and are abundant in towns and cities throughout much of the world.[4]" Other information here: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Rock_Pigeon/lifehistory

A nice shot, they come in different colours. They are a pest in most big city's. Large buildings have spikes to stop them roosting.
Chris Gibbins18-Nov-2015 08:26
Not the most popular of birds, which is a pity, really, as they're quite colourful.
Laura Milholland18-Nov-2015 07:20
