Opposites, Mission Beach, California, 2015

This young athlete is using the boardwalk wall as a base for her stretching exercises. As she pulls on a leg, she looks out to sea, bathed in the warm evening light. She never notices the softly focused man standing behind her, only a few feet away. He is a scavenger, combing the boardwalk and its trash barrels, looking for refuse that he can later exchange for cash. Using a 350mm telephoto lens, I was able to bring them together in this moment, expressing a series of opposite ideas: differing ages, genders, activity, and goals, contrasted in sharp vs. soft definition. They never noticed or acknowledged each others presence.

Thanks, Tim, for this comment. Well said. As you will note from my own commentary on this image, I intend to trigger thought by comparing opposite ideas here. Street photography offers an abundance of opportunity for such imagery.

In some ways this is the essence of street photography for me: Images that engender thought. This image makes me think of the separations that are unaddressed in our culture.

Thanks, Iris, for this comment. You are right. This image is indeed about "different realities." These people never looked at each other, although they share a common space within a public area. They represent entire different lifestyles as well.

These "scavengers" and/or homeless are so much a part of the beach scene in Southern California that they're taken for granted and have become virtually invisible. The young girl is immune to the man's presence and is clearly plugged into a different reality. Of course, the same thing can probably be said about the man.
