This is a Black Oyster Catcher - taken on the shore of the Strait of Juan de Fuca (Washington Coast)

Fairly uncommon. We were lucky to get to see these so up close

Very well captured Terry.
We are fortunate to have Oyster Catchers close by.

Thanks very much, Hal! It turns out there are several sub-species of the Oyster Catchers. I'll look up the 'Sooty'

Wow ! Lovely and close. One of Cindy's favourite birds.
Pity she won't see it. One of my favorites too.
Here they are scarce but not endangered.
ln oz they are called Sooty oyster catchers
but l refuse that use that silly old name
