Gravesite of Mirabeau Buonaparte Lamar. He was the second President of the Republic of Texas.
He was a politician, poet, diplomat and soldier in the Texas war for independence.
Upon learning of massacre at Goliad and the Alamo, he traveled with his horse and sword to join Sam Houston's army in spring 1836.
He distinguished himself with bravery at the Battle of San Jacinto. On the eve of the battle, Lamar courageously
rescued two surrounded Texans, an act that drew a salute from the Mexican lines.
Lamar was promoted that night from private to Colonel and given command of the cavalry during the battle the following day.
Lamar was appointed as the Secretary of War in the interim Texian government and later was elected
as vice-president of the Republic of Texas under Sam Houston.
Lamar was known for his quote:
“ The cultivated mind is the guardian genius of democracy and, while guided and controlled by virtue, the noblest attribute of man.
It is the only dictator that freemen acknowledge and the only security that freemen desire."
