The west coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria is exposed to strong winds and rough seas during the tropical wet season. The only sheltered place along this section of coast is in the lee of Red Island, but the shallow and confined waters create quite a challenge for a ship large enough to bring supplies a thousand kilometres from Cairns.
This port, if you can call it that, services a cluster of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island communities centred on the town of Bamaga. It is 40 km south of Cape York (north Queensland, Australia) on the Gulf of Carpentaria side.
