Negative Space 3

141103_0066P.jpg

This is actually a photo my wife took. We got to talking about negative space while we were walking around the Williamsburg area, so I figure she should get into the action. She took this one with negative space in mind. This is the James River at sunset.

When thinking about negative space as a technique, I realize that it can be empty space or non-empty space. Of course, you could say the empty space in this photo actually is filled with something which happens to be sky. Again, I wonder about what the subject really is. Is it the shoreline, the moon, or both. That's up to you. For me it is really both. Shooting short lenses never gets you a big image of the moon, but our imagination fills in what the moon actually looks like because we have seen it millions of times. So, here is the moon just about bleeding off the top of the frame with a wooded shoreline below it.

I ask myself many times if the photo I look at resembles the scene that my eyes observed in the field. For certain things like shiny water reflections shot into the sun, the photo is never as good as what I remember. In this case, the photo actually closely resembles what I remember of the scene. That is why I like it. The color gradient of the sky is one thing that sticks into my mind. So, as a photo, I consider it nice to view, actually closely resembling what I remember and an example of negative space.

One more thing about it. Unlike other examples I have seen, this one doesn't scream "Negative Space Technique." It seems like a natural scene and not contrived. And of course the main reason I like it is because Ginny took it. Right dear?
