The Path to Dee Wright Observatory

Dee Wright Observatory sits at the summit of the McKenzie Pass (elev 5300). It is unique, constructed of lava. From the observatory, one can view the surrounding mountains through unique portals. In this photo, the edge of the building shows, along with the lava beds beyond the path. In the distance is Belknap, a volcano, on the left, and Little Belknap to the right of it. In the middle is the peak of Mt. Washington, and Mt. Jefferson is located on the extreme right. Unseen in the distance is Three-Fingered Jack. Behind me are the Three Sisters and to my right Black Butte. The lava beds here are pretty big.

For more information about the observatory, see this link - http://www.tripadvisor.com/Guide-g52072-i3250-Sisters_Central_Oregon_Oregon.html

Very typical lava landscape.Reminds me of Lanzarote.Excellent shot.

The lava beds sure do give it that barren look.

You live in a wonderful area, Vern. Lava is singularly unlovely rock, though, you just have to find interesting places and light. Looks good.

A very different landscape to those we normally see in your pictures, Vern - and in its own way, there is a certain attractiveness to the rugged scene.

That's really a unique landscape. Only place I've seen similar is on the big island in Hawaii.

Not a hike you'd want to make barefoot. . . . ;-)
