According to the Internet - and we all know that something doesn't get put on the Internet unless it is true - Sunday's "supermoon," photographed here above the Sandbridge Fishing Pier in Virginia Beach, VA, is the closest the Moon has been to the Earth in eighteen years. I processed the image using Nikon's NX2 software, then applied NIK filters to liven up the colors and contrast - ND gradient (to darken the sky), skylight, tonal contrast, and pro contrast. Clouds over the Gulf Stream obscured the Moon until it was well into the sky, preventing photographing it near the horizon.
"SuperMoon" is not a scientific term, but a word that astrologer Richard Noelle coined in a 1979 article for Dell Publishing Company's HOROSCOPE magazine, describing a new or full moon which occurs with the Moon at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit (perigee). In short, Earth, Moon, and Sun are all in a line, with Moon in its nearest approach to Earth. ~ Wiktionary
