False Comet among the starclouds

Pilliga Nature Reserve, NSW

The "False Comet" of southern Scorpius flies along the boundary between the dense distant starclouds of the Milky Way's galactic bulge and the darker star-studded region of the Milky Way's central dust band.

The head of the comet contains the brilliant open cluster NGC6231, and the tail fans out as the loose association of Collinder 316, composed of the association of massive hot blue stars called Scorpius OB1. At the end of the tail lies the nebula IC 4628, and just a little further on is another nice open cluster, NGC6268. In the dark region to the right are two more red nebulae, NGC6334 the Cat's Paw and NGC6357, sometimes called the War and Peace Nebula.
