Surfbird, molting to breeding plumage

Point Pinos, Monterey Co

Bird viewed at distance; closeup http://www.pbase.com/image/155650530 . In full breeding plumage, Surfbirds show a head white with thin dark streaks, extensive rusty scapulars, and underparts white with heavy black markings. These features are emerging on this bird, photographed on Monterey Bay in mid-May. Because the species breeding range is the largely inaccessible interior mountains of Alaska and the Yukon, there are few if any good pictures online of Surfbirds in full breeding plumage.
