An artisan at the Artisans d'Angkor cooperative - Siem Reap, Cambodia

Artisans d'Angkor is a business cooperative helping to revive artisans' skills from the Angkoran era while creating job opportunities for young people in their rural home villages. They have created over 1,000 jobs for both artisans (657 artisan jobs) and non-craftsmen living in rural Cambodia. Artisans are trained in traditional Khmer craftsmanship (stone and wood carving, lacquering, gilding and silk processing). Artisans d'Angkor also has been involved in restoration projects at the Angkor Archaeological Park including the reproduction of parts of some items in the various temples there. This work is necessary for the preservation of the Park because of the poor, age-related condition of many of the temples and the open access of the temples to approximately two million annual visitors.
