You can see the walls that surround the old town. They date from the mid 1500's. Cartagena, like Quebec, Louisbourg and Old San Juan, is a walled city. I love fortified towns like this. There are so few of them in the New World, but they tell amazing stories about the life and times in which they were built and the amazing engineering that went into their design.
