Last light on Chichagof Strait, near Funter Bay, Alaska, 2013

This memorable sunset capped our very first day in Alaska. I made this about fifteen minutes after the sun had set (at 10:15 at night), turning Chichagof Strait into a copper and turquoise channel carrying the eye to the brilliantly colored snowcapped peaks on Chichagof Island itself. In just our first five hours of cruising, I had already photographed a bald eagle, a rainbow, and a breaching whale – a fitting prelude to this image, one of the most striking dusk scenes I’ve ever encountered.

Thanks, Iris, for pointing out how the "leading lines" composition strengthens this image by drawing the eye through the frame to the mountains and sky. To do this, I made sure my horizon line was higher in the frame -- (a lot of photographers tend to automatically divide such pictures in even halves.) By pushing the horizon up, I am able to emphasize the leading lines in the water over the clouds in the sky.

The ripples in the water become leading lines that pull me into a dramatic wonderland of light and color.

Thanks for noting the peaceful nature of this scene, Tim, yet the always prevalent threat of the sea itself is certainly implied in the pattern that sweeps through this image as well.

I love the feeling here - there is a calmness in the colors of sunset, but yet the ripples in the sea suggest not all is completely well.

I was already busily editing my pictures on my laptop in my cabin when I glanced out the window and noticed that the water had turned to copper. Fortunately, all of the cabins on the ship open directly on to the deck. I just opened the door, turned to my left, picked up my camera and made this image.
