On June 15th, a Saturday night, the riot police in massive numbers staged their final assault on Taksim and Gezi Park. Placards, tents and other materials belonging to the demonstrators were destroyed or confiscated. Transportation into Taksim was systematically closed down to prevent the arrival of potentially thousands of demonstrators from other Istanbul districts. The two-week occupation of Gezi Park was over in a violent show of authority by the state.
However, after a brief respite in the early hours of Sunday, thousands of pro-Gezi supporters were back on the streets, protesting against the raid. Crowds at Dolmabahçe, Karaköy, Kabataş, Cihangir and other areas near Taksim Square were pursued by bands of riot police. Like the day before, the resistance and the crackdown lasted well into the night and the early hours of the following morning.
