When Dante was 12,in 1277 he was promised in marriage to Gemma Donati, daughter of Manetto Donati, member of the powerful Donati family.
He married her later, when he was about 20, in this church, which still exists.
Dante and Gemma had three children, someone says four, and their marriage was a quite normal one, even though he never dedicated any poem to his wife, preferring to take inspiration from his ideal muse,Beatrice Portinari, whom he met only two or three times in his life.
