The building adjacent to High Street was occupied by "Brown The Drapers" then there was a little road that ran from Montague St to Castlehill St. It was called "Peddies Lane"
Then "The Norman Stewart Institute". The manager/caretaker was Jock McGhee. I well recall McNicol The Baker and their excellent French Cakes. A Saturday morning treat.

I think the building was called the Norman Stewart Institute. It had the town library and a billiard room with two tables. The manager was an ex football player who had played with one of the major teams. We had to get written permission from our parents to play billiards. It was during the 1940's and we ran like the dickens from the school, in the afternoon, to get a table. My father's shop (McNicol Bakers) was right across from the institute.

Well, frankly, it's been bland here ever since they flattened the original old building that once graced this corner. It had an interesting history too. Fingers crossed.
