Art At The Edge

Loch Achray, Trossachs, Scotland

This is most definitely not the image that I expected to come away with at one of the Trossachs most scenic lochs. Loch Achray is pretty charismatic but it wasn't really doing a lot for me on the day. Not until I saw these wonderful reeds with their mix of bright yellow and green leaves so breathlessly still that they appeared etched against the water. I very carefully composed the curly twigs hanging down so that they didn't interrupt the vertical reeds. I think those curly twigs add a sense of menace, there is something unfriendly about them probably because they are twisted hooked and silhouetted like a witches fingers, that juxtaposition I find fascinating. I deliberately overexposed the shot to keep the water as bright as possible without actually burning it out.

A lovely picture, all the better for an uncluttered composition.
