epicornic shoots

On Inland White Mahogany (Eucalyptus mediocris).
A remarkable feature of most species of eucalypt is their capacity to re-shoot from branches after even the most severe of fires. This capacity arises because the reserve shoots are positioned well below the bark where they are well-protected from heat. This photo was taken 4 months after a hot fire defoliated this small tree.
