American lady (<em>Vanessa virginiensis</em>)
19-JUN-2012 Christine Hanrahan

American lady (Vanessa virginiensis)

The caterpillar left, is on pearly everlasting (a native plant species), one of the main larval host plants. In the early instar (or early stage), these caterpillars look almost black with none of the colour exhibited here. There can be several caterpillars per host plant, though a lot fall prey to predators.
