Confrontation, Palm Springs, California, 2013

The jaws of a massive palm tree, clawing at the window of a local sports bar, seem about to devour all that lies within. Meanwhile, an incongruously small decorative football dangles in its path, creating a symbolic confrontation between man and nature. The room seems to be abandoned, as if all who once celebrated here have fled before nature’s onslaught. The play of light and shadow on the scene adds an emotional touch to the image -- the surreal reflections on the glass window mysteriously paint the palm as in a curtain of glowing, foggy light.

Thanks, Oliver, for coming to this image. Glad you found the beauty lurking just outside the window.

Great to hear from you again, Alina. It has been quite a while since I've been honored with your commentary. Glad you are drawn to this image -- I thought it looked like a painting as well. I made it about 3:30 in the afternoon, so it was the start of late afternoon to evening light. The colors are the colors of nature itself, and are always beautiful.

I keep looking at this photo Phil, the palm trees outside the window look like huge painting. The shadows on the table, chairs and the floor are fresh like morning. I think it was morning not evening light. I like warm colors of this “painting”. Brown, greens and yellow are beautiful combination. Lovely shot!
