In Marilyn’s shadow, Palm Springs, California, 2013

Scale incongruity takes center stage in downtown Palm Springs, as Seward Johnson’s 26-foot tall painted iconic bronze sculpture of the late actress Marilyn Monroe dwarfs a pair of tourists standing beneath her billowing skirt. The vivid late afternoon colors add a surrealistic touch to the scene. The man and woman were posing for their own picture – the man tries inspect the underside of the huge skirt, while the woman attempts to cover his eyes. The huge poster on the building in the background adds a sense of place, while the feathery clouds swirling overhead echo the curves in the massive skirt.

Well observed, Tim. The woman is no doubt enjoying this moment as much as the fellow.

Yet - the couple in the image is seeming to start on a relationship of their own.

Thanks, Rose, for your comment. One of the films we saw at the Film Festival in Palm Springs was a new documentary on Marilyn Monroe, called "Love, Marilyn," and among its many interviews was one with a person who was there when they shot that scene for the "Seven Year Itch." He told that story of Joe DiMaggio's response -- he was indeed furious, and he apparently took much of his anger out on Marilyn. The marriage was probably doomed from the start, but this skirt incident may have indeed been the straw that broke the camel's back.

The scale incongruity works perfectly. I recall that when Marilyn filmed this ionic scene in "The Seven Year Itch" it upset her husband Joe Dimaggio so much - he was furious at the thought of everybody looking up her dress - that it was a major factor in the breakup of their marriage. Joe seems eerily prescient.
