Polystachya pubescens.jpg

Hanging Gardens Greenhouses, in San Francisco

Polystachya is a genus of mostly African species, but they also accur in the Americas, however the latter ones are not nearly as showy as the species from the Old World. The flower is in the right orientacion, basically they are upside down, what is called in "orchid talk" as being "non-resupinate". Basically, all orchids flowers start this way, but as the flowers develop, they twist 180 degrees, and end up with the lip or labellum, at the lower part of the flower. The "non-resupinates" do not do this, the lip is upper most.
