Ivan the Great Bell Tower with the Assumption Belfry. The Bell Tower was built in 1505-8 and takes
its name from the Church of St Ivan Climacus, which stood on the site in the 14th century. It became
the tallest building in Moscow in 1600 when Boris Godunov added a third story to extend it to 81m.
The four-story Assumption Belfry was built alongside in 1532-43, and holds 24 bells, the largest of
which (64 tons) traditionally tolls three times when the tsar died.
