Town Square, Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island, The Galapagos, Ecuador, 2012

An incongruously large statue of a Land Iguana dominates the town square of Puerto Ayora, the largest town in the Galapagos. Santa Cruz Island covers a large area, and only a portion of the island belongs to the Galapagos National Park. The town lies outside the boundaries of the park -- it offers anchorage for the many ships that pick up and drop off visitors to the park itself. It makes a living off what the park itself has to offer, which primarily is a chance to see exotic birds and animals in the wild. Since there are no wild animals in the town, it has built its own out of concrete. It glares at us here quite realistically. I include a figure in the background, conveying the fact that large "super-iguanas" such as this one are now very much taken for granted by the locals.

Glad you enjoyed this one, Rose. I see the man's hand as reaching out to scratch the incongruously prickly spine of the concrete iguana. I originally wanted to express the "taken for granted" attitude of the locals here, but your comment makes me think of another metaphor here. The wildlife of the Galapagos can be also be seen as economic partners, in terms of bringing its people employment. No wonder this fellow is scratching the iguana's back!

My favorite image in this gallery! I especially like the way the man's hand is almost petting the head of the iguana; it's a superb combination of elements. I also like the way the color of the man's shirt is repeated in the window squares. Vote!

Thanks, Jane. The expression on the face of the incongruously large iguana drew my attention, and as I walked entirely around the small park where it was installed, I saw how the foreground to background relationship gradually changed as I shifted my own vantage point. This was the only relationship that told the story I wanted to tell.

So well seen and taken! Including the person and the colorful background in this statue shot makes for a wonderful photograph. V
