La Habana Vieja, Havana, Cuba, 2012

Old Havana contains the core of the original city of Havana. A World Heritage Site, Old Havana is a warren of narrow streets lined by 3,000 old buildings, some dating back to the 17th century. Although the Cuban government has tried to restore and preserve Old Havana, it has greatly deteriorated over the last 50 years due to age, decay and neglect, as well natural forces such as the devastating 2008 hurricane. I made this image of the activity along one of its streets from the rooftop of a hotel just after dawn, just as the morning light painted the entire scene in golden tones. I built this image around the glimmer of light reflecting off the license plate of a parked car. I made dozens of exposures of this scene, and chose this particular image because of the scale references offered by the four people flanking the parked car at this moment.

Delighted that you see such chaos as a jewel, Jude. I did as well.

Beautiful image, Phil. The golden light turns the ciaos of this old Havana scene into a jewel.

Great point, Celia. Your evocative comment sums up the story I was trying to tell here.

The predominantly golden-yellow color of this image is very eye-catching but what strikes me the most is the incongruity between the deterioration of the buildings and the rich hues of gold that they are reflecting. Gold is a color that we often associate with wealth and decadence yet this Old Havana is far from that. You make me pause and think about the ravages of time and weather, on homes that were probably once the pride and joy of the people who built this city up centuries ago. There is a sense of old glory here.

This image is also a wonderful expression of the city's character--of the labyrinth-like tightly connected buildings, and streets that disappear around a mysterious corner like a maze. I love the way you use the road to draw us into the city, but when it curves away from our sight, it leaves us wanting to explore more of the city.

Thanks, Ron and Carol, for your commentary. As you note, Carol, this image not only relies on the warm of its color -- it really is a study in detail. The decay is palpable. The three girls are almost certainly on their way to school, where uniforms are usually required.

Such a beautiful morning light here! Although the decay is very apparent, the place seems full of life just the same with people going about their business, The morning air "feels" warm and fresh to me, probably so even though it is early. That golden light is delicious and who wouldn't want to start their day as they see that upon awakening? The three girls are dressed in a similar fashion, and perhaps they are on their way to school. This image really offers a very detailed feeling as to what it is like.

Lots of effort and a very attractive outcome.
