Horses are not the type of animal that wants to be alone. They have a very strong need to be with other horses.

I sometimes wonder how very lonely this old stallion must be. Once a very fearsome and successful male with a large following of mares and colts, he has lost it all. Now, he can only watch from a distance. Far enough away that the other stallions will not chase down and punish him for being too close. Only occasionally will he have the company of one or two younger bachelor stallions. They seem to want to try out their fighting skills with him. As captured in this single frame of a video, he seems almost painfully lonely as he watches the herd from a hilltop.
