take that winter

Waterloo, Ontario

Wow, what a winter it has been so far.
Let me explain.
Last winter, as you can tell if you look at the beginning of this blog, we did not have a lot of ice. Snow yes, but ice no. This meant that I got away with using worn cyclocross tires for the whole winter and had no issues at all with slipping. However, this winter, so far, we have had more ice which affects cycling then we did all of last winter combined, and it is still fall.
So, with that in mind, consider the events of last Friday.
Riding over the ped bridge which crosses the expressway, I dumped the bike. The back end swung out violently to the right, and I went down like a sack of potatoes. Bruised my behind, and put a golf ball sized lump on my left elbow. The bike spun in lazy circles as it slid down the bridge, and I actually ended up tumbling a bit and in the process, skinned my knee.
Later that same day, after turning left onto Highland Road, I dumped the bike again - thankfully, I am smart enough to leave huge gaps in traffic when I pull out in the winter on my bike just in case this kind of thing happens. This time, the front wheel skidded out to the right and dumped me on the same knee and elbow. I wanted to sit on the kerb and cry in pure frustration, but I didn't. Instead, I went out and bought two 700x40c Schwalbe Marathon Winter tires with 120 studs per tire.
Take that winter, I mock you from my position of traction superiority.

Yes, understand fully, or get some Pany Smokes and let most of the air out works too, But be careful in any case. Try to have some fun. V

This is really a great story! You better take care and slow down, even with your spikes! Expensive riding if you get hurt and nevertheless fun, I guess!

Yikes! That sounds incredibly painful. But you are clearly a very experienced cyclist and as you said below, know how to fall into one of these crashes. But still... pretty impressive I think. Hope the new tires do the trick.

Going to answer this one publicly - The camera was, both wipeouts, in the pannier bag that landed upwards...
Years of off road riding has enabled me to crash bikes "expensive side up" - only once did the xtr derailleur land dirt down - into a log actually - and then I drove it into the spokes and mangled the hanger. Did no damage otherwise and it was an easy and cheap fix. Every other single time the bike went down, I dumped it on the left side. Habbit has made me put expensive things in the right pannier so if I crash, odds are it will be up and ok. I don't know why this happens with my crashes, but it does, and it has saved me a bundle over the years.

So sorry about your mishaps and resulting sore spots. I hope the new tires do the trick.
And I admire your attitude. You weren't wearing your camera around your neck at the time, were you?

Oh, Chris. I do feel your pain. The scrunch of the snow must sound so terrific, but falls like yours are not fun. At least you did not separate your shoulder like my husband did when his Vespa flew out from under him on a pool of water! No more Vespa, now a Smart Car...
