Probably a couple hundred thousand foreign laborers work in Dubai: most are housed in labor camps in the desert on the outskirts of the city. As almost none of them own a vehicle, they walk . . . . everywhere.
There is a lot of open "waste" ground between cells of industry or development, between the camps, and the laborers have overlaid their own spiderweb of footpaths to get from here to there.
The water table in Dubai is just barely subsurface, so shallow, seasonal muddy pools and mudflats are common. This pic is of a line of stepping stones placed across a low spot along one of the paths. A humble bridge which you would never know was there without walking these spaces yourself . . . . .
