GALAPAGOS HAWK (Buteo jamaicensis) 746

Galapagos Islands - Ecuador

This raptor is an apex predator. It is believed that there are only about 150 mating pairs of this species in existence today. This hawk lives mainly on insects and giant centipedes, small lava lizards, snakes and rodents. It is not uncommon for it to take young marine and land iguanas, and sea turtle and tortoise hatchlings in its native Galapagos.
