9-20-11 Cliff. Johnston

Mews - Front - South

Pearland, Texas

Most recent changes made on 9/20/11.

The lattice work above the roof is topped with rough cedar 2x4s. The spacing is the width of a rough cedar 2x4 plus an 8 penny nail. As the summer heat sets in additional 2x4s will be fastened into the spaces to provide total shade for the roof beneath. As the temperatures cool in the fall these temporary 2x4s will be removed so that the mews can gain heat from the sun. Hopefully this will keep my hawk comfortable.

I am uncertain at this particular moment as to whether or not I will make a shutter for this window or simply take the hawk inside the house when the weather drops below freezing.

Easement limitations in the backyard are responsible for the footprint, 8'x10'. The Architectural Committee of our Housing Association limited the height to 8' or less and forced me to move the location of the mews. Actually, the move should work out for the better as the exposure to the sun has changed for the best, access to an electrical outlet is improved and I'll be able to see my hawk while I sit on the patio sipping a long, tall, cool one :-)

I also had to add a horizontal piece of cedar wood to hide the EPDM roof wrap-around on each side.

Now to submit my appeal to the Architectural Committee and hope that I have remedied all of the objections :-) Got my fingers crossed...
