"Lord Stanley's Mug"
Weekly Challenge #59: Traditions

The Stanley Cup is the championship trophy of the National Hockey League (NHL), the major professional ice hockey league in Canada and the United States. It is commonly referred to as simply "The Cup", "The Holy Grail" or facetiously (chiefly by sportswriters) as "Lord Stanley's Mug".

The Cup is seen as a national treasure by Canadians, routinely appearing in commercials, movies, public appearances and even a promotion that allows a lucky fan to spend a day with Stanley. Unlike the trophies awarded by the other three major professional sports leagues of North America, a new Stanley Cup is not made annually; the champions keep the Cup until a new champion is crowned. It is also one of only two trophies in professional sports which has the name of the winning players, coaches, management, and club staff engraved upon it, the other being the CFL's Grey Cup.

The Vancouver Canucks and the Boston Bruins face off in the final series of games for "The Cup" on Wednesday, June 1 at 5:00pm Pacific Time. Hockey's Holy Grail has not called a Canadian city home since 1993 when the Montreal Canadiens won the last of their record 24 Cups and has never been won by Vancouver. It's time to bring the cup home, it's Vancouver's time....it's what we live for!
