It's roosting in a wood pile in a back yard right here in Bloomington, only about 3 miles from my house. These owls are very tame and they keep their eyes closed as a way to camouflage themselves. Normally they roost in a tree and aren't easy to find. They are the smallest species of owl we have in the eastern part of the country, only about the size of a robin. It's not every day you get the opportunity to see one out in the open like this, especially so close to home! The homeowner was very generous in reporting the owl and allowing me to come in his back yard. I didn't stay long because I didn't want to disturb the owl too much.
