Clouds over the Amazon, Belem, Brazil, 2010

As we approached Belem, which sits at the mouth of the Amazon, an enormous cloud hovered over the city, dwarfing its skyline. This image defines the vast size of that cloud, using scale incongruity to tell the story.

I was awestruck at the size comparison this image makes between man and nature. The massive cloud overwhelms the skyline of Recife here, yet those who inhabit those buildings can not see it. Thanks, Tim, for noting the question of awareness.

The recent tragedy in japan reminds us that nature holds the ultimate power. This image evokes, for me, that awareness.
