Lismore Ice House, Millennium Park

Liismore, County Waterford, Ireland view map

This ice house is from the 18th century. It is partially below ground and covered by a mound filled with gravel for drainage. An ice and salt mixture was forced into the chamber. It was used until World War II in connection with the Salmon trade.

This is the inside chamber. Too bad that people have left junk in there.

Interesting story behind this chamber. When I was a kid people used sawdust to keep ice from melting.
